Herald of the Titans & Argent Defender
Two of the hardest achievements in Wrath of the Lich King, both gated by an average-item-level cap rather than a gear check. Full ilvl-capped gear lists for all 25 specs live on their own dedicated pages — Herald of the Titans BiS and Argent Defender BiS — this page covers what the achievements actually require and the real fight knowledge behind them.
Herald of the Titans requires defeating Algalon the Observer in Ulduar with your average item level at or under 226 — meaning most of your gear has to come from Ulduar itself, Trial of the Champion, Naxxramas or crafted items, not the current raid tier. Argent Defender is the equivalent for the full Trial of the Grand Crusader gauntlet (Northrend Beasts through Anub'arak) with a similar average-ilvl ceiling. Both punish you for wearing anything that pushes your average up — including your shirt and tabard, which is why the gear lists in the BiS tool deliberately leave those two slots empty with a warning instead of the usual "pick anything."
The gear lists themselves are not RealNibba's own theorycrafting. They're sourced from a real, actively-maintained community project — the credits are below, and the full data is wired into the same BiS tool you already know, under Content → Herald of the Titans / Argent Defender.
1.Herald of the Titans: what actually kills you
Algalon isn't complicated so much as unforgiving — the late-game gear that makes every other Ulduar hard mode trivial doesn't help you here, because you're capped out of it. The real mechanics, boiled down:
| Ability | Who it hits | Frequency | Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantum Strike | Tanks | Every 3–5s | High |
| Phase Punch | Tanks | Every 15s | High |
| Cosmic Smash | Raid | Every 25s | High |
| Big Bang | Raid | Every 90s | Wipe mechanic |
| Black Hole Explosion | Raid | On every Collapsing Star kill | High |
| Arcane Barrage | Raid (offtank's constellations) | Every 3–5s | Low |
| Ascend to the Heavens | Raid | On every unsoaked Big Bang | Wipe mechanic |
Tanks and healers eat Quantum Strike + Phase Punch
Algalon dual-wields, swings every second, and Quantum Strike is basically a guaranteed hit. Combined with Phase Punch landing roughly every 15 seconds, the tank is going to take serious, near-constant damage — soft damage reduction on pull (Hand of Sacrifice and similar) matters here more than it does on most Ulduar bosses.
Cosmic Smash is easier to dodge than it looks
Picture the room as a clock face: tanks stand at 12, melee DPS at 6. When you see the red circle and the cast warning, you only need to rotate to 9 or 3 o'clock — you don't need to sprint away. Even caught between two smashes, unmitigated damage tops out around 5–7k as long as you're not standing right on the initial circle.
Big Bang has exactly one real counter
Soaking it requires a Shadow Priest using Dispersion, or a Protection Paladin (Ardent Defender will keep them alive through it), or Guardian Spirit on whoever's tanking it. If the soak fails, Ascend to the Heavens resets the encounter as a full wipe — there's no partial credit.
Phase 2 black holes aren't random
At 20%, Algalon phases and the ground spawns Black Holes — their placement is fixed, not RNG. Note where the first set of Collapsing Stars spawns during Phase 1; the Phase 2 Black Holes always land in those same four spots. And never push him below 20% right as Big Bang is about to land — the Black Holes despawn and you get to explain to your raid why they're standing outside Ulduar as a ghost.
2.Argent Defender: the real per-boss notes
Argent Defender is arguably the harder achievement of the two — you're clearing an entire instance under the ilvl cap instead of one boss — but it's less punishing overall since a single mistake doesn't have to mean a full reset. The critical moments, boss by boss:
Northrend Beasts & Lord Jaraxxus
Both are close to standard encounters at this gear level. Spread your ranged group against the worms' Paralytic Toxin, and don't stand in front of them. On Jaraxxus, dispel Nether Power the instant it appears — ignoring it at ilvl cap gear isn't survivable the way it is in full Tier 10.5, and missing the dispel usually means waiting for the next lockout.
Faction Champions
Dispel, dispel, dispel. Treat it like a real PvP encounter, except your opponents are two expansions ahead of you on gear.
Twin Val'kyr
The "stack on the door and outheal the vortex" approach works, but it's genuinely risky at this ilvl — mousing over the color debuff and moving to the matching side is the safer play. Give the soak duty to a Shadow Priest if you have one; one mistimed orb can drop a player to 50–60% HP in a single hit.
Anub'arak: the boss everyone panics on for no reason
The whole fight is standard until the push phase at 30%. Stop DPS around 35% (dots will carry it to ~32%), wait for the Burrower pack to spawn, then cleave them down alongside the boss to force Phase 2. A Shadow Priest's Vampiric Embrace can sustain a whole group through this if you split two Shadow Priests one per group. Any healing reduction works on Anub'arak, so Improved Mind Blast, Affliction dots and Aimed Shot all pull their weight here — you don't need to touch the adds otherwise, just the boss.
The real risk in push phase is the offtank, who stacks Burrower aggro on themselves the whole time. Hand of Sacrifice, Divine Protection, Divine Sacrifice — whatever damage reduction you have, this is when to use it, chained if you need to. It's not a hard fight mechanically; it's a fight people psych themselves out of when their HP dips under 90%.
There's also a dedicated "Block Spec" Protection Paladin/Warrior build in the BiS tool built specifically for tanking unlimited Burrowers during push phase, separate from the standard Argent tank build.
3.Where the gear lists actually live
Every one of the 25 class/spec combinations covered — both scenarios, plus the alternate builds where they exist (Hit Capped vs. Stamina Protection Paladin, Dual-Wield vs. 2H Unholy Death Knight, the Block Spec add-tanking builds) — has its own dedicated page: Herald of the Titans BiS and Argent Defender BiS. Pick your class, spec and build the same way you would on the regular Phase 4 list. Every item links to a real, live Wowhead tooltip with the real gems baked straight into it; enchants are shown right under the item name, and each item's real source (which boss, which difficulty) is listed underneath that.
4.Credits
This gear data is not something RealNibba tested or theorycrafted. It's a real, actively-maintained community project called the Grand Selayan Cartel itemization compendium, built for Warmane Icecrown's trading community and shared publicly, most recently updated May 2025. RealNibba's part was reading the real spreadsheet end to end, resolving every item name to a verified Wowhead ID, and wiring it into this site's existing gear-list tool — not authoring the theorycraft itself.
