01 / Overview

How this list works

This is a Phase 4 (Icecrown Citadel, 25-player) PvE Best in Slot list — the strongest realistic gear target for each spec once you're raiding ICC, built from Icecrown Citadel and Trial of the Grand Crusader drops, Emblem of Frost purchases, reputation rewards and a handful of surviving Ulduar items. It isn't a "what you'll have on day one" list — it's the target to itemize toward.

Every item name links straight to Wowhead's WotLK Classic database, so the tooltip you see on hover is the real, live item — full stats, armor, requirements, and set information exactly as Wowhead has it, not something typed out by hand. Where a slot has a genuinely close alternative — a different trinket for a different fight, a ring you might already have from an earlier kill — it's listed underneath the main pick.

Every item on this page — including the full Death Knight tier set — is linked to a real, verified Wowhead entry.

Item tooltips, icons and character model assets come from Wowhead.com — RealNibba doesn't host or create that data, and isn't affiliated with Wowhead.

02 / Reading guide

How to read the panels

Stat priority is a stacking order, not a set of hard rules — it tells you which stat to favour when two upgrades are otherwise close, after you've met the caps. Caps & requirements are the thresholds that actually change how you gem and enchant: a hit cap is where extra hit stops helping your abilities land (though for dual-wielders white-hit still values some past it), an expertise cap is where dodges and parries against you drop off, and the armor penetration cap is the point where more ArP rating does nothing. Where a cap says "reduced by racials," that's real — an Orc with axes or a Human with swords reaches the expertise cap with noticeably less on gear, which frees those item budgets for damage stats. The best-races panel is why that matters: in WotLK a racial can be worth a trinket's worth of a stat, so it's a genuine part of the plan, not flavour.

On gems, the plan behind each build is deliberate. Where the layout is a verified socket-by-socket preset it's applied to the live tooltip so hovering an item shows the exact gems; where it's a cap-aware family recommendation ("stack Strength, hybrid only where the socket bonus is worth it") it's written as a plain-text note instead, so the page never shows you a wrong socket count. The confidence badge on each build reflects how settled that gearset is in the community — "high" for specs where the ICC BiS is uncontested, "medium" where raid composition, professions or a personal ArP-vs-crit preference genuinely splits the answer.

The alternatives under each slot aren't downgrades — they're the items that are close enough that something other than raw item level decides between them. When you're choosing between the main pick and its alternative, these are the questions that actually settle it:

01

Are you at your caps? If the alternative has hit or expertise you don't need, it's dead stat — take the one with more of your priority stat instead. If you're still under a cap, the item that closes the gap usually wins even at a small item-level loss.

02

Does one keep a set bonus alive? A 4-piece tier bonus is often worth more than a higher-ilvl off-set piece in the same slot. Check whether swapping to the alternative drops you below 2- or 4-set.

03

Is it fight-dependent? Two trinkets (a passive one vs an on-use, an armor-pen proc vs a static stat) can each be "best" depending on the encounter and your other trinket. Alternatives flagged this way are meant to be swapped per boss, not picked once.

04

Do your professions change it? Blacksmithing's extra sockets, Jewelcrafting's Dragon's Eye gems and Engineering's cloak/glove tinkers all shift which physical piece is actually ahead.

05

Do you already own it? If you're building toward this list rather than sitting on it, an alternative you already have is fine to keep until the main pick actually drops — the gap between them is small by definition, or it wouldn't be listed as an alternative.

Chasing Herald of the Titans or Argent Defender instead? Those are ilvl-capped achievements with a completely different itemization target, so they get their own dedicated gear lists rather than living inside this PvE tool: Herald of the Titans BiS and Argent Defender BiS. Both use real Wowhead tooltips the same way this page does, sourced from a real community project rather than RealNibba's own testing — see the Herald & Argent guide for the full credits and the real fight knowledge behind both achievements.

03 / In-game

Track this in-game

Don't want to alt-tab back to this page every time something drops? The H/A Bis Tracker addon can track this exact endgame gear live in-game — a dressed 3D character preview, real-time roll/drop alerts, and a tooltip hook that tells you on hover whether an item's worth grabbing. It needs the free Endgame Data Pack installed alongside it (auto-detected, no setup) to unlock this Phase 4 list as a trackable scenario.

04 / Avoid these

Common gearing mistakes this list avoids

Over-capping hit. Past your ability hit cap, hit rating does almost nothing for most specs — a lower-ilvl piece with your priority stat beats a higher-ilvl one that dumps you 200 rating over.

Gemming for a socket bonus that isn't worth it. A +4 stat socket bonus rarely justifies putting a hybrid gem in when a pure gem of your best stat is +20. The gem plans here only chase the bonus where the maths actually favours it.

Ignoring the relic slot. Librams, Totems, Idols and Sigils are a real DPS or healing slot — this list fills it for every class that has one, including the ranged/relic collapse on the character sheet.

Wrong meta gem, or an unactivated one. The meta requirement (e.g. "more blue gems than red") has to be met or the meta does nothing — the exact gem layouts here keep the meta active.

Chasing item level over itemization. A 264 piece with the right stats regularly beats a 277 piece with dodge and parry on a DPS spec. This is a BiS target, not "equip the highest number."

05 / FAQ

Common questions

QHow current is this list?

It's the Phase 4 (Icecrown Citadel, patch 3.3.5a) ceiling — the last content patch of the expansion, which is what every 3.3.5a private server runs. It doesn't go stale the way a live-game list would.

QIs this PvE or PvP gear?

PvE only, built for 25-player Icecrown Citadel. Resilience and PvP set bonuses aren't considered. Herald of the Titans and Argent Defender are separate ilvl-capped targets with their own lists.

QDo professions change the picks?

They change the physical-DPS slots most — Blacksmithing sockets, Jewelcrafting Dragon's Eye gems, Engineering tinkers. The assumptions tag on each build states which professions it's built around.

QWhat if I don't have the tier tokens yet?

Use the alternative listed for that slot until the token drops. The gap is small by definition, and a 4-piece bonus is usually worth waiting for rather than forcing an off-set piece.

QWhere do the non-drop items come from?

Emblem of Frost vendors (Icecrown, Dalaran), Trial of the Grand Crusader, faction reputation rewards, and a handful of still-relevant Ulduar hard-mode pieces. Hover any item for its real source on the Wowhead tooltip.
