The Shadowmourne Grind

Freshtobis paid 5,000 gold a shard just to skip the line on Warmane's runs — then tried doing it the hard way, live, with viewers. The Lich King handed over exactly one shard for the entire night. Now it's your turn: clear Icecrown Citadel 25-player, one real raid week at a time, and see how many weeks it takes YOU to collect 50 Shadowfrost Shards and forge Shadowmourne.

How this works

Real quest: Icecrown Citadel's "The Splintered Throne," picked up from Highlord Darion Mograine after already forging Shadow's Edge and infusing it with Unholy, Blood, and Frost — confirmed directly on Wowhead's own official Shadowmourne guide. It asks for 50x Shadowfrost Shard. That's the part this simulator is about.

The boss order below is real, not invented. Icecrown Citadel 25 actually gates progress like this: Lower Spire is a strict line — Marrowgar, then Deathwhisper, then the Gunship Battle, then Deathbringer Saurfang — and nothing past Marrowgar is even attemptable until you clear your way there. Only once Saurfang is dead do the three back wings (Plagueworks, Crimson Hall, Frostwing Halls) unlock at once, progressable in any order relative to each other, but each is still its own internal gate (Festergut AND Rotface both dead before Putricide; Blood Prince Council before Blood-Queen Lana'thel; Valithria Dreamwalker before Sindragosa). The Lich King doesn't open up until Putricide, Blood-Queen Lana'thel AND Sindragosa are all dead — which, chained back through their own prerequisites, really does mean a full 12/12 clear, exactly like the actual raid.

Blizzard's original loot table (and current retail WotLK Classic) only lets 9 of these 12 bosses drop a shard, at 38% on Normal / 68% on Heroic — verified against two independent WotLK 3.3.5a item databases. But this is built to match Warmane specifically, since that's where Fresh to BiS actually plays: every one of the 12 bosses can drop a shard here (not just 9), The Lich King's is a guaranteed drop every time you down him, and the rest drop at roughly HALF Blizzard's original rate, per the site owner's own experience running this quest and Warmane's own forums, where staff have confirmed the slower pace is an intentional, permanent choice. There's no official exact number published for that "roughly half," so this simulator uses 19% Normal / 34% Heroic per boss — a disclosed approximation, not a verified stat.

Everything about wiping is a made-up-for-fun layer on top, not real statistics — same as the Tiny Abom Hunt's wipes, but this time each boss's odds are the site owner's own honest read on how that fight actually goes on Warmane. Bosses tagged "Medium" or "Hard" carry a real bump to their wipe chance (untagged ones are the easy fights); Lady Deathwhisper is the one boss that changes tier entirely between difficulties — trivial on Normal, one of the hardest checks in the instance on Heroic. Failing the SAME boss again gets harder each time on top of that (the raid loses confidence), and enough wipes anywhere in the week makes the whole night shakier for every fight after — watch the Raid Morale line. On the Hard fights specifically (Professor Putricide, Sindragosa, The Lich King), enough consecutive wipes carries a real risk the whole week's raid falls apart early. And separately from all of that: each week carries its own small (2%) chance, rolled once at the start of that week's raid, of a completely unrelated real-life interruption ending your night early — the power goes out, the ISP has other plans, that sort of thing. When a raid does end early, for whatever reason, you can also just choose to Leave Raid yourself rather than keep pushing.

  • Lower Spire: Lord Marrowgar → Lady Deathwhisper → The Icecrown Gunship Battle → Deathbringer Saurfang
  • Plagueworks: Festergut + Rotface (either order) → Professor Putricide
  • Crimson Hall: Blood Prince Council → Blood-Queen Lana'thel
  • Frostwing Halls: Valithria Dreamwalker → Sindragosa
  • Frozen Throne: The Lich King — needs all three wings finished, guaranteed shard on a kill

Progress is saved only in your own browser (clearing site data resets your run). Boss icons are Wowhead's own real, Blizzard-authored achievement art, not custom illustrations. Hall of Fame entries are verified server-side — a win can't be faked from devtools, since it takes 50 real, individually server-rolled Shadowfrost Shard tokens to submit one.
