Subtlety Rogue WotLK Guide
Subtlety Rogue DPS guide for WotLK 3.3.5a: rotation, cooldowns, the 20/0/51 talent build, glyphs, stat priority and BiS gear for ICC and Ruby Sanctum.
Subtlety is the stealth-and-burst Rogue. It plays with Shadow Dance for bursts of ambush attacks, it applies the Hemorrhage debuff, and it gets combo points from the critical hits of the rest of the group through Honor Among Thieves. It is a strong spec in groups that crit a lot, and a spec that rewards planning around cooldowns.
This guide covers the priority, the cooldowns, the talents and glyphs we run, the stats to reach and the mistakes that cost the most. It is written for Icecrown Citadel 25 and Ruby Sanctum on 3.3.5a. The short overview is in the class guide.
1.How the Subtlety Rogue plays
The base rotation is simple: keep Slice and Dice and Rupture up, keep the Hemorrhage debuff on the target, build combo points with Backstab or Hemorrhage, and spend them on Eviscerate. What makes Subtlety different is the burst. Shadow Dance lets you use stealth abilities such as Ambush in combat for a short time, and you line it up with your other cooldowns.
Honor Among Thieves gives you a combo point whenever someone in your group scores a critical hit, so the spec plays better in a group with high critical strike chances. Premeditation, Preparation and Shadowstep give you tools for positioning and for resetting your cooldowns.
2.Rotation and priorities
- Slice and DiceKeep it up. Refresh it before it ends.
- RuptureKeep it on the target.
- HemorrhageKeep the debuff on the target. It is also a builder.
- EviscerateAs your finisher, when the buffs above are up.
- BackstabYour main builder from behind the target.
- CooldownsUse Shadow Dance for a burst of Ambush, with your other cooldowns lined up.
Be careful with energy and combo points, and plan your Shadow Dance windows. Use Preparation to reset your cooldowns when it makes a real difference, and not as a reflex.
3.Cooldowns and raid utility
Subtlety is a cooldown-driven spec, and these are the buttons that matter.
Lets you use stealth abilities in combat for a short time. Use it for a burst of Ambush, lined up with your other cooldowns.
Resets the cooldowns of several abilities, including Shadowstep, Vanish and Evasion. Use it when it gives you a real second burst.
Teleports you behind the target and gives you a bonus to your next attack. Useful for positioning on fights with movement.
Gives you extra combo points before a stealth opener.
Gives a damage increase to another player and the threat goes to them. The raid leader will tell you who.
Removes harmful magic effects and gives spell resistance. Learn which fights ask for it.
4.Talents and glyphs
Our recommended Subtlety build is the 20/0/51 in the calculator, with a Hemorrhage variant at 23/0/48. The talents that define the spec are Shadow Dance, Shadowstep, Honor Among Thieves, Slaughter from the Shadows, Premeditation and Preparation.
The major glyphs are Tricks of the Trade, Rupture and Shadow Dance.
Enter the Shadow Dance for 6 sec, allowing the use of Sap, Garrote, Ambush, Cheap Shot, Premeditation, Pickpocket and Disarm Trap regardless of being stealthed.
Attempts to step through the shadows and reappear behind your enemy and increases movement speed by 70% for 3 sec. The damage of your next ability is increased by 20% and the threat caused is reduced by 50%. Lasts 10 sec.
When anyone in your group critically hits with a damage or healing spell or ability, you have a 100% chance to gain a combo point on your current target. This effect cannot occur more than once every second.
Reduces the energy cost of your Backstab and Ambush abilities by 20 and the energy cost of your Hemorrhage by 5, and increases all damage done by 5%.
Requires Stealth. When used, adds 2 combo points to your target. You must add to or use those combo points within 20 sec or the combo points are lost.
When activated, this ability immediately finishes the cooldown on your Evasion, Sprint, Vanish, Cold Blood and Shadowstep abilities.
The bonus damage and threat redirection granted by your Tricks of the Trade ability lasts an additional 4 sec.
Increases the duration of Rupture by 4 sec.
Increases the duration of Shadow Dance by 2 sec.
5.Stats, gems and gear
Subtlety wants hit, then expertise, then critical strike, then attack power, then haste and armor penetration. The hit and expertise caps are the same as for the other Rogue specs, and critical strike is a good stat because it also feeds your group.
The best items are in the BiS list below. Daggers are the usual weapon for a Backstab build.
Blood Fury is the standard pick. Axe Specialization also covers fist weapons (+5 expertise), which matters for Combat fist builds — daggers get nothing from it.
Sword / Mace Specialization suits Combat sword builds with +3 expertise; Every Man for Himself for utility. Night Elf’s Quickness (+2% dodge) is DPS-neutral flavour.
Heaven's Fall, Kryss of a Thousand Lies
Lungbreaker
Fal'inrush, Defender of Quel'thalas
Tiny Abomination in a Jar
Sharpened Twilight Scale
Geistlord's Punishment Sack
Sanctified Shadowblade Breastplate
6.Common mistakes
• Letting Slice and Dice or Rupture fall off.
• Using Shadow Dance without lining it up with your other cooldowns.
• Using Preparation when nothing important is on cooldown.
• Backstabbing from the front. You need to be behind the target.
• Playing without a group that crits, and losing the benefit of Honor Among Thieves.
7.On the bosses
Subtlety is a strong choice on burst and on fights with movement. A few notes:
Plan your bursts around the add waves, and use your stealth tools to move quickly.
Use Shadowstep to move and Cloak of Shadows where the raid plan asks for it.
Line up Shadow Dance with your burst windows.
Keep your finishers up through the transitions, and use Tricks of the Trade on the player the raid leader chooses. See the Lich King guide.
